Down but Not Out: Properties of the Molecular Gas in the Stripped Virgo Cluster Early-type Galaxy NGC 4526

چکیده
We present ALMA data on the 3mm continuum emission, CO isotopologues (12CO, 13CO, C18O), and high-density molecular tracers (HCN, HCO+, HNC, HNCO, CS, CN, CH3OH) in NGC4526. These enable a detailed study of physical properties gas longtime resident Virgo Cluster; comparisons to more commonly-studied spiral galaxies offer intriguing hints into processing cluster environment. Many line ratios NGC4526, along with our inferred abundances CO/H2 conversion factors, are similar those found nearby spirals. One striking exception is very low observed 12CO/13CO(1-0) ratio, $3.4\pm0.3$, which unusually for spirals though not Cluster early-type galaxies. carry out radiative transfer modeling some archival (2-1) data, we use Bayesian analysis Markov chain Monte Carlo techniques infer CO-emitting gas. find surprisingly [12CO/13CO] abundance $7.8^{+2.7}_{-1.5}$ $6.5^{+3.0}_{-1.3}$ at radii 0.4 kpc 1 kpc. The emission from HCN, CS CN also relatively bright, optically thick inner parts features hint that environment may have removed much galaxy's diffuse, thinner its atomic Angular momentum surrounding intracluster medium caused contraction disk, magnifying radial gradients such as [13CO/C18O]. More chemical evolution would be interesting order explore whether unusual ratio entirely an environmental effect or it reflects old stellar population this galaxy.

Chandra Observations of Gas Stripping in the Elliptical Galaxy Ngc 4552 in the Virgo Cluster
We use a 54.4 ks Chandra observation to study ram-pressure stripping in NGC 4552 (M89), an elliptical galaxy in the Virgo Cluster. Chandra images in the 0.5−2 keV band show a sharp leading edge in the surface brightness 3.1 kpc north of the galaxy center, a cool (kT = 0.51 −0.06 keV) tail with mean density ne ∼ 5.4± 1.7× 10 −3 cm extending ∼ 10 kpc to the south of the galaxy, and two 3 − 4 kpc ...
متن کاملNGC 4254 : a spiral galaxy entering the Virgo cluster
Deep Effelsberg Hi spectra of the one-armed, bright Virgo cluster spiral galaxy NGC 4254 are presented. Five different positions were observed in the 21 cm Hi line with the Effelsberg 100-m telescope: one in the center and 4 located one HPBW to the NE, NW, SW, and SE, respectively, from the galaxy center. The spectra are compared to existing deep VLA observations, and the single dish and interf...
متن کاملUv Properties of Early-type Galaxies in the Virgo Cluster
We study the UV properties of a volume limited sample of early-type galaxies in the Virgo cluster combining new GALEX far(1530 Å) and near-ultraviolet (2310 Å) data with spectro-photometric data available at other wavelengths. The sample includes 264 ellipticals, lenticulars and dwarfs spanning a large range in luminosity (MB ≤ -15). While the NUV to optical or near-IR color magnitude relations...
متن کاملA dynamical model for the heavily ram pressure stripped Virgo spiral galaxy NGC 4522
Context. Evolution of spiral galaxies in the Virgo cluster. Aims. We determined the parameters of the interaction between the interstellar medium of NGC 4522 and the intracluster medium of the Virgo cluster. Methods. A dynamical model including ram pressure stripping is applied to the strongly Hi deficient Virgo spiral galaxy NGC 4522. A carefully chosen model snapshot is compared with existing...
متن کاملAtomic gas far away from the Virgo cluster core galaxy NGC 4388 A possible link to isolated star formation in the Virgo cluster ?
We have discovered 6 10 7 M⊙ of atomic gas at a projected distance greater than 4 ′ (20 kpc) from the highly inclined Virgo spiral galaxy NGC 4388. This gas is most probably connected to the very extended Hα plume detected by Yoshida et al. (2002). Its mass makes a nuclear outflow and its radial velocity a minor merger as the origin of the atomic and ionized gas very unlikely. A numerical ram p...
